Awesome service

Japan is undoubtedly the land of awesome service. It’s not unusual for a taxi driver to stop the meter if he feels he’s taking a longer route than necessary.

On asking a Muji store associate for the nearest train station location – she pulled out a map book of Tokyo , photocopied the relevant page and then came out 2 floors to the street level to indicate the direction.

It’s cold and rainy in Tokyo. Stopped yesterday at a cafe en route to collect a sandwich takeout. The restaurant manager invited us to wait inside where it was deliciously warm and comfortable. Served hot tea while we were waiting, added an extra topping to the orders placed. Brought warmth , comfort and joy. Raised the bar for service.

What happens when friendly awesome service is delivered ? The person doing so feels good and empowered. The customer is delighted. Possibly becomes an evangelist/regular customer of that company / store. If the customer is a visiting foreigner it enhances their experience of the country. At a basic human level we seek and appreciate a sense of connectedness. Some things go beyond the realm of business.

Muji is one of the largest retailers in Japan. The cafe is a much smaller business.

Awesome service is possible at any scale of business.

Winter..

The temperature in Tokyo has dropped considerably since yesterday. Autumn morphing into winter. With adequate warm clothing one can enjoy the weather better. Reminds me that there’s no such thing as bad weather…only inappropriate clothing.

The past several days have inspired a lot of thoughts and reflections on society , what constitutes progress , the role of the individual and collective..More on those in subsequent posts.

Green Roofs in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is now the first Scandinavian city to put a mandatory green roof policy into action. The new policy requires vegetation and soil to be a mandatory part in architectural planning; in particular, it covers all roofs with a slope less than 30 degrees, plus the refurbishment of older roofs. By putting this new green roof policy into action, it pushes the great Danish city one step closer to reaching their carbon neutral goal by 2025.

Now, as far as the green roofs go, there is a list of specific requirements to consider. Buildings with green roofs must be able to meet at least 2 of the following requirements:

  • The roof must absorb 50-80% of the precipitation that falls on the roof.
  • The roof must provide a cooling and insulating effect of the building and reduce reflection.
  • The roof must help make the city greener, reducing the urban heat island effect, counteracting the increased temperatures in the city.
  • The roof must contribute to a visual and aesthetic architectural variation that has a positive effect on the quality of life.
  • The roof must double the roof life of the roofing membrane by protecting it against UV rays, etc.

Superb initiative by Copenhagen. The green consequences of this requirement are several..

- Architects will have to learn about green roofs to incorporate them in their plans. The knowledge base in green roofing will shoot up.

- Innovation in green roofing (in Copenhagen to begin with ) will increase

- It would inspire architects and city planners in other parts of the planet to look at green roofs and other innovative eco ideas.

Clever Little Bag

Puma decided to do away with boxes for packing shoes . Seems they researched it for 21 months and hired Yves Behar. The outcome was to do away with the box and use a bag. This is possibly a very corporate way of doing things . Take ages and hire a famous consultant. The suggestion could have come from a Puma associate . But , minus the stamp of a famous person it may not have gotten the blessings of the powers that be at the corporate HQ. We do hope that the bag is made of a biodegradable material.

Whatever the pathway we appreciate the initiative by Puma to relook at the packaging. Scores of other companies and industries need to relook at packaging at retail and in their production chain to minimize the environmental impact.

Inspiring a Clean(er) Planet

One of our Japanese retail clients recently informed us that their store team were mighty impressed by Clean Planet.

Inspired by Clean Planet they have done away with plastic bags , plastic clips, metal pins , plastic band for collar , tissue paper. Garments are soft packed and given to the customers in paper bags.

One of the many ways in which we are inspiring…and enabling a Clean(er) Planet !

Our voice as a customer matters. Often we find (in India) customers being passively tolerant of bad service , poor quality, waste. Or being aggressive.There is a mid path (and a necessary one) of being assertive and persistent.

When you encounter bad quality , poor service , waste – pl take a few mins to assertively voice your feedback. Equally important – Suggestions . If you’d like your local supermarket to stock organic products then ask to meet the section-in-charge or the store manager to share your views. Request your family n friends to do so as well. Doing this consistently improves the odds of the change you are seeking to manifest.

And hey , pl acknowledge good service and practices !

Remember , no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

Nissan recently announced that some of their future models will spray Vit C on it’s occupants *. Guess Nissan is trying to make the car journey (for the users ) healthier , more comfortable . And to differentiate Nissan from it’s competition.

* your computer bag will be equally moisturized !

World over – more than better cars we need way better roads and public transport . The absence of which is adding to the car population of the planet.

It would be really great if vehicle companies start to use their clout and resources to improve road conditions / support citizen initiatives for better roads ( written from an Indian perspective ).

Undoubtedly the car journey these days is getting longer and more stressful . Millions of people spend precious minutes and hours each day in the confines of their vehicle. Nissan is spot on in the endeavor to improve the experience.

Here are somethings vehicle manufacturers , marketers can do….

- Offer small wind chimes that can be hung in the car . The sound of a delicate wind chime is soothing (the wind chime in my room is chiming it’s approval )

- Offer delicate aroma products suitable for a car . There are perfume dispensers for cars . But most of them are so strong that one needs to open the window to diffuse the smell ! Ideally the product should be(it definitely can be)  biodegradable .

- Create a mechanism where messages can flash on the screen of the music player / TV / special screen : Kindness , love , joy , action inspiring messages -

- Between now and the time you reach your destination – think of 3 good events that happened today

- In 1 min – think of 2 people who bring you immense joy. Acknowledge them for the gift of their presence

- In the next 2 hours do something to help another person without any expectation of a payback

- Remember to thank the universe for all the blessings

- Smile

- Make another person smile

- Don’t use plastic bags

…..the list could go on.

Why depend on car manufacturers to improve the journey ?  DIY .

Stop the water while using me – The message as the brand name  (soooo Clean Planet )

All products are made with organic and/or natural ingredients, packaged in biodegradable containers. The neat design of the package is a relief from the normal cosmetics which have reams of fine print and a rainbow of colors.

While we love the name what we like even more are the organic / natural ingredients and especially the biodegradable containers. Currently the plastic from cosmetic products is enough to turn the moon into a dump yard (of course after we’ve ensured that fate for planet earth ) . Biodegradable containers is a much needed idea for a whole range of products – cosmetics , food .

Vote with your money

I want to introduce you to the wall. The wall holds up a raging dam of human potential. It’s held together with money – the money the same people spend. Change how you spend money and the wall collapses, and the world changes. Drastically. Forever.

If you think that soda is bad for people (which it sure as hell is), never, ever, ever, buy soda. That’s a vote in the ballot box. Same goes for meat, alcohol and other plagues on humanity. Want more organic food? Bite the bullet and buy organic. That’s a vote for the organic industry and more power to them.
Every dollar in your pocket is a vote. Don’t forget it. Every single one is counted. It’s a failsafe system. It’s perfect democracy.

Besides the problem of toxic chemicals there is the added factor that several products do not have the expiry date marked on them. The expiry date  is stamped on the packaging which naturally needs to be discarded . Lipsticks , eyeliners , mascaras etc don’t have the date of manufacture or the expiry date marked on them. This means that users are not only using products with toxic chemicals – some of them are past their expiry date adding to the health risks they pose to the users.

This def points to the need to create recreate sense of self , beauty which do not rely on toxic cocktails.
